Watery end to family on holiday; only one survives

Six people were killed and one escaped with injuries when a vehicle ran off the road and fell into the river at a bridge along the Batticaloa - Polonnaruwa road on Friday night.
Dr. Mohammed Ashik, working in Oman was travelling to Colombo with his family and friends after spending his vacation in his hometown Maruthamunai, Kalmunai to get back to Oman and the van they were travelling in skidded and plunged into the water.
Dr. Ashik escaped with injuries while the other six passengers drowned. The body of five-year-old Reamy is still missing and search operations are continuing. The dead were identified as Shakira (35), Kadhijaumma (64), Jehan (32), Inshab (12) and the wife of the doctor 30 year- old teacher Suhadha.
