SB sees grand conspiracy

Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayaka, a one time university student leader is no stranger to university turmoil, but having successfully stood up to militant Inter University Student Federation, he now sees the agitation by the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations as a well-planned conspiracy by a group of lecturers who have captured power in the FUTA recently to undo all positive achievements they have made in the university system and to also plunge the country into chaos by making an impossible demand of a 200 per cent salary increase

Some confusion over Tamils in custody, says Prof. Rajiva

Former head of the Sri Lanka Peace Secretariat and present head of the government delegation to talk with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), Professor Rajiva Wijesinha admits there has been some confusion with regard to the question of Tamil civilians in custody without charges. With regard to the former LTTE combatants Prof. Wijesinha said the government has embarked on a significant rehabilitation programme. Regarding those taken into custody on suspicion of clandestine involvement with the LTTE, he said since the ministry of disaster management and human rights had been dissolved the progress had been slow though he has tried unofficially to expedite the process.
