Cease talks and act fast - Anandasangaree
Ex-parliamentarian and TULF leader V. Anandasangaree, the laureate of the 2006 UNESCO Madanjeet Singh award for the promotion of tolerance and non-violence, says the government should now cease all types of talks with the minority groups but instead implement a substantial scheme based on facts collected from talks that have already been held with these parties in the past.
In a hard hitting interview with The Nation, Anandasangaree, a lawyer by profession, said the government’s proposal for a Senate will not directly help solve the minority issues but instead proposed the Indian model as an alternative for the resolution of the Tamil issue.  More

Nediyavan’s arrest a major step forward - Professor Rohan Gunaratna


Sri Lanka should ensure the establishment of a mainstream Tamil political leadership in order to move towards permanent peace, said terrorism expert, head of the International Centre for Political Violence and Terrorism Research (IC PVTR), Professor Rohan Gunaratna. In an interview with The Nation, he said the arrest of the head of the LTTE’s international network Perinpanayagam Sivaparan alias Nediyavan was a major step in helping Sri Lanka to recover from violent 30 years.
He also briefed on the activities of the LTTE during the past two years. More

 
Private sector pension scheme, boon to working class - Vasu

There is a raging controversy over the proposed Pension Scheme for the private sector employees with trade unions up in arms against it. The Nation had occasion to discuss this issue with Official Languages and National Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara who himself is a veteran trade union leader in the country
Q: You are a veteran trade union leader with long years of experience in this field behind you. Now there is a serious allegation being made against the government saying that it is planning to commit a blatant violation of the rights of the working class through the Bill on the Private Sector Employees’ Pension Scheme.
