Serial assailant hiding after assaulting lab technician
By NS and Sarasi Paranamanna
A medical laboratory technician, employed at the Ragama Teaching Hospital was assaulted by a member in the hospitalís minor staff. This had been the seventh incident in two months reported against the alleged offender by the hospital staff.
The assault had taken place at the overseerís office when the technician had gone to recover the body of his relative. When he had asked for a trolley to take the body, the alleged offender had aimed a blow at the laboratory technicianís head with a piece of metal.
At the time of the assault the offender had been off duty. The victim had been admitted to the primary care unit and later transferred to a ward.
The medical laboratory technicians at the Ragama Hospital had claimed that if the director of the hospital failed to take action against the offender they would be compelled to take appropriate measures.
Subsequently the director had lodged a complaint at the Ministry of Health. At present the offender has been suspended from service but the Ragama Police have been unable to arrest him so far.
Even though the alleged offenderís previous violent and aggressive action had been reported to the hospital authorities they had failed to take any action.
Prior to this incident he had assaulted other workers including an employee at the morgue who had suffered injuries due to multiple stab wounds.
