Sixteen arrested in Excise raid

During a raid conducted by Galle Excise Station under the supervision of the officer in charge of excise W. S. Kulatunga, 16 suspects were arrested for possessing drugs. The raid was conducted on July 26 in the areas of Hikkaduwa, Malwanna, Padiyagama and Gintota.
The officers of the excise station recovered 250 mg of heroin, 250g. of cannabis and 90 bottles of moonshine. The suspects who executed the illicit liquor business had escaped into the woods nearby when the excise officers raided the area.
The 16 suspects were produced to the Balapitiya Magistrate who imposed a fine of Rs. 65,000. The 16 individuals were released following the payment of the fine. The Excise Department of Galle is still on the lookout for the suspects who escaped the raid.
