calm: No ‘Heroes Day’
Situation in the
Jaffna peninsula remained calm yesterday despite
speculation of possible minor unrest following
reports of holding LTTE ‘Heroes’ Day’ commemoration
It was reported that a certain section of the Jaffna
University students had prepared to commemorate LTTE
Heroes’ Day and put up posters and notices inside
The notices were eventually removed.
Jaffna Security Forces Commander, Major General
Mahinda Huthurusinghe told The Nation they had
instructed the people not to indulge in such
activities as the LTTE was a banned organisation.
“There were no problems. We instructed the
university students not to get involved in such
activities and they agreed with us. Therefore, the
situation is very calm,” he said.
