Did you know that one of the leading causes of
accidents on high speed expressways is reckless
drivers’ weaving in traffic? They can result in
‘multi-car pileups’, with mangled vehicles and
In developed countries road fatalities @ miles
driven are lowest for divided highways, as ‘head-on
collisions’ are eliminated.
The Southern Highway will have two travel lanes in
each direction and a hard shoulder for emergency
stops. Under normal travel conditions, when traffic
is light or moderate, the left hand lane is the
travel lane and the median lane is for overtaking
Please don’t ‘hog the middle of the road’. It will
only tempt the driver behind you to weave around you
and overtake on the ‘wrong side’, with the risk of a
high speed accident
“No one has telepathy. Signal your intentions and
Do you know the mantra for safe expressway lane
look in your rear view mirror,
look in your side mirror,
look over your shoulder,
and if it is all clear, .....make the lane change.
If you enter the median lane without signaling, you
could get ‘rear ended’ by a faster vehicle. If you
cut into the slow lane without signaling, you could
easily run a vehicle off the road.
You absolutely must look over your shoulder before
changing lanes because there is often a ‘blind spot’
between the visual fields of the rearview and side
In the old days, at election time, the saying was
vote early, vote often!
For all of us to travel safely on the Southern
Expressway, ‘Signal Early, Signal Often!’
Give them a BRAKE, let them LIVE”
Did you know that every year, hundreds of police
officers are killed and seriously injured during
routine traffic stops on motorways? They are struck
by vehicles that do not slow down and move to the
median lane to maintain a safe passing zone.
When you see the flashing blue lights of a police
car or motorcycle, the flashing yellow lights of an
ambulance or emergency response vehicle, SLOW
If it is safe, SIGNAL and move to the median lane
and let these HEROES do their job. Let them LIVE.
Entry and Exit points of the Highway are ‘HOT
SPOTS’ for ACCIDENTS!!!!
Did you know that drivers making sudden lane changes
and cutting across traffic lanes to make the EXIT
RAMP at the last minute are the cause of serious
‘roll over’ accidents? Drivers on the ENTRY RAMP who
do not look over their right shoulder and YIELD to
fast moving traffic on the highway are equally
Exit Ramps are posted well in advance. Considering
that you are traveling at ‘a mile a minute’, plan
ahead. If you are in the slow lane, signal your
intention to exit the highway early. If you are in
the fast lane, SIGNAL early and get into the slow
lane, to exit safely.
On the Entrance Ramp, SIGNAL, Look over your RIGHT
SHOULDER, YIELD to fast moving traffic on the
highway, merge when safe and build up speed quickly
to avoid getting ‘rear ended’.
