President speaking to the affected at Koslanda

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who inspected the landslide-affected Koslanda, Haldummulla areas from air, later arrived at the Sri Ganesha Tamil School where the survivors of the tragedy are being looked after. The President has emphasised that the government will take all measures to safeguard the future of children who lost their parents in the tragedy. Read more

Koslanda disaster - casualties not yet known

The landslide took place early this morning at Koslanda, Haldummulla in Badulla has claimed at least 10 casualties, the unconfirmed sources say. Sources also say that the area which runs for over three kilo meters included over 100 line houses and at least five government quarters. Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that he suspects over 150 persons are still trapped in the area, but the villagers suspect a number of 300 persons are trapped. The landslide risk is still there and rescue operations are underway by the Disaster Management Centre, Sri Lanka Army and Police.                (Pics by P. Jayantha, Haputhale) Read more
