Veteran politician SD Bandaranayake, father of Minister Pandu Bandaranayake, passed away yesterday (3).

A former Member of Parliament from Gampaha constituency, Bandaranayake was a left-leaning Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) member. A relative of former Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike, SD was an ardent supporter of SWRD throughout his political career. He followed S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike to the SLFP at its formation in 1951.

In 1952, he became one of the 9 SLFP parliamentarians. After the assassination of Mr. S.W.R.D. Bandaranayaike in 1959, S.D. Bandaranayake left the party and formed Bosath Bandaranayake Peramuna. Later he re-joined the SLFP and continued to represent the parliament till 1989, even retaining his seat when the SLFP was reduced to 8 seats in 1977.

S.D. Bandaranayake was 97 years old.
