Minister of Mass Media and Parliamentary Affairs Gayantha Karunathilaka confirmed Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam’s statement that no final decision has been reached to hold the next general election under a new electoral system.

“Cabinet agreed only to consider everyone’s opinion to decide on what the electoral system should be. It was never decided to hold the upcoming general election under a new electoral system. We are still discussing the matter,” he said.

The Education Minister yesterday rejected Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Rajitha Senaratne’s statement made during a weekly cabinet press briefing that the next election will be held under a new electoral system and it was a decision taken by the cabinet.

He has further expressed though the United Nation Party (UNP) is of the opinion that that the electoral reforms should happen, they have not agreed to hold the general election under a new system as yet since the discussions are underway.
