Overturns Provincial High Court judgment

The Court of Appeal on Friday gave its verdict on the Galle Municipal Council Mayor’s being in office and annulled the Southern Provincial High Court judgment which brought back the Mayor in office after the Chief Minister of the Province had removed him from his post by a gazette notification.

Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijeyalal de Silva had removed the Mayor of the Galle Municipal Council Methsiri de Silva on January 23, 2013 by a gazette notification and Provincial High Court had ruled the Chief Minister’s act null and void on June 26, 2014. However, the Court of Appeal today annulled the High Court judgment which reinstated the Mayor in his office.

Mayor, De Silva speaking to ‘The Nation’ said that he heard about an unfavorable judgment from court on him. When asked about his future plans he said that “I will remain in the Mayor’s room, till such an announcement is officially served on me.”

The official term of the municipal council will end on October 15, 2015. The Nation also asked him about contesting again and he said that it’s too early to predict about tomorrow’s plans. However, he vowed to remain in politics.
