Court issues severe warning

Colombo Chief Magistrate gave a hard warning for all suspects who had been charged for contempt of court as they participated in a protest in front of the Bribery Commission on April 23 despite a court order not to have any protests. The Court warned nine members of Bhikkus, 10 United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarians and few other local government members and said that no bail will be given in future on such offences.

All they were granted personal bail of Rs.1 million each and all except Bhikkus were given cash bail of Rs.10,000 each. The team was represented a large team of lawyers including 11 President’s counsels. Former Chief Justice Mohan Pieris was also among them.

Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara thera who did not appear before courts was issued warrant and a request has been made to name former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as a suspect. The case will be taken again on July 13, 2015.
