The Cabinet of Ministers yesterday appointed a committee comprising five ministers to identify the principles laid down by each party on introducing a new electoral system, informed sources said. The Committee is to meet this morning and finalize the draft bill soon.

As had been directed by political President Maithripala Sirisena at the last Party leaders’ meeting, some parties have brought their proposals to the meeting and President Sirisena also presented his initial draft or the concept paper at the table.

Ministers S.B. Dissanayake and Patali Champika Ranawaka had insisted that the bill should be drafted and announced in the gazette notification yesterday itself.  However Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader Minister Rauff Hakeem had been opposed to this and spoken against it.

Then, the decision came up to appoint a committee to study the proposals of each party for the identification of the basic principles laid down by them for a change in the present electoral system. The committee comprises Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka, Sarath Amunugama, Lakshman Kiriella, Rauff Hakeem and Palani Digambaram.
