1002-bed private teaching hospital to open in August

The Chairman and president of the South Asian Institute of Technology, Dr Neville Fernando told the Nation that the Dr Neville Fernando hi-tech teaching hospital – Malabe is near its completion and will commence its operations in August 2012. “This will be one of the most modern hospitals in the country and will be serving people from Kelaniya up to Homagama and Kaduwela,” he said.

Dr Neville Fernando1002 bed - Hi-Tech Teaching Hospital will include a Dentistry Unit, Ophthalmology Services, Orthopedics Section, Urological Services, Surgical and Oncology Services, Gynecological Services, Cardiology Unit, Radiology Unit, Diabetes Care Unit, Dietary Services and many more. And it will also include a fully-equipped medical laboratory, Express treatment unit, 3 ICUs, Infectious and Tropical Diseases Unit (ITDU), CT Scanning facilities, X-ray facilities, Pharmaceuticals and many other facilities.

Dr Fernando said that all the high quality services will be offered to the public at a lower rate. “We are not going to charge ‘Colombo rates’ from the patients’. Charges will be much cheaper.” He further said that the hospital will offer free services to the patients depending on their financial backgrounds. “We will give some free beds to the deserving patients and also, discounts for the soldiers. All the development in the country is because of the sacrifices they made,” he stressed.

The main purpose of establishing the Dr Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital is to provide clinical training facility for the medical students of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) which is a UGC approved degree awarding institute and the first private sector Green Campus in Sri Lanka. SAITM offers a range of courses in their Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of ICT and Media, and Faculty of Management and Finance. SAITM is situated on a beautiful four acre land in Malabe which has all modern facilities for teaching and learning and a board of professors and lectures from both Sri Lanka and abroad who have excelled in their respective field of study.
