Tributes are paid to Günter Grass on Monday in his city of birth, Gdansk, and German hometown of Lübeck following the death of the Nobel Prize winning author who died in hospital last Monday. Former Polish president Lech Wałsa said Grass was a great intellectual, calling him a citizen of Gdansk.

Günter Grass is a Nobel-winning German author and social critic , who achieved worldwide fame with his debut and best-known novel, The Tin Drum. His imaginative boldness and wild satirical style were as remarkable as his subject matter. He stunned Europe when he revealed in 2006 that he had been a member of the Waffen-SS during World War II. He was always controversial, and sometimes bitterly attacked by critics at home for discussing German victimhood as well as German guilt. Outside his country he was, inevitably, called Germany’s postwar conscience Grass pressed Germany for decades to face up to its Nazi past, winning the Nobel Prize for literature in 1999.
