VAT Scam accused sentenced to 102 years

The Colombo High Court today sentenced former Deputy Commissioner at the Department of Inland Revenue, Gnanasiri de Soysa Jayatilake to 102 years imprisonment after he plead guilty to charges on the VAT scam case.

The court also imposed a Rs.12 billion fine on the accused. Jayatilake plead guilty to all 34 charges filed against him. Accordingly, Colombo High Court Judge Kumudini Wickramasinghe imposed a three year prison sentence for each of the 34 charges.

The court ordered that the 102 year sentence be served in three years. The VAT scam for which the former deputy commissioner was prosecuted is considered the biggest such tax scam in South Asia. 

Investigations into the scam were conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
