Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has informed Parliament that he is studying the matter pertaining to the position of the Opposition Leader. As such, he has said no decision has been taken regarding the matter as yet.

The Speaker was originally due to announce his decision to Parliament today. Earlier today, a letter signed by about 60 United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MPs calling for Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) Leader Dinesh Gunawardena to be appointed as the Opposition Leader was handed over to the Speaker.

Besides Gunawardena, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), which is now the largest opposition party in Parliament, has put forward the name of its Leader, R. Sampanthan for the post of Opposition Leader.

However, current Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala De Silva insists he is still suitable to function in the position of Opposition Leader.
