President urges MPs to support on 19A

President Maithripala Sirisena arrived in Parliament this morning to participate in the the debate on the 19th Amendment to the Constitution and told the parliament that he was the only President who had been so flexible and committed to reducing or curtailing the powers of the Executive Presidency. He also reminded the occasions and his predecessors who had promised to abolish the Executive Presidency and how they failed or no little interest was shown during their terms in office. “Sri Lanka has no international enemies now because of our successful approach towards the international community. The new government and its commitment to enact the 19th Amendment has received immense support from the international community,” President Sirisena said. He also urged all the MPs to support the 19th Amendment and not to miss historical opportunity. “This is what the people have been waiting to happen for the past 38 years. So let us not disappoint them,” he added. His proposal on 19th amendment was seconded by Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe. The debate will take place today and tomorrow and the vote is due on tomorrow evening.
