President Maithripala Sirisena pledges a new political culture reiterated that the political mistakes that had been absorbed to the system cannot be allowed to continue. The President made this observation while addressing the Polonnaruwa district convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) held yesterday at the Buddhi Mandapaya in Polonnaruwa.

He assured that he will never work according to the whims and fancies of individuals or targeting personal gains. “The people’s representatives who were elected by the people must always respect the people’s franchise and they must always uphold the people’s voting rights. They must always be ready to implement institutional policies and plans and the efforts to postpone an election using executive powers cannot be accepted”.

The President said he will not allow anyone to use public funds for their personal benefits and for obtaining votes and assured that public money will be used in its maximum to build the nation. Speaking further, the President said  that the changes people anticipated for the last 37 years to remove the unlimited powers of the executive presidency have now been realized and stressed that the government's people friendly program will be further strengthened.

He also warned that he didn't hail from a traditional Freedom Party family, but his parents were the members of the United National Party. He implied that the more than the party politics, politicians should follow the basic rules and regulations instead of getting a shield from the Executive.

Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala De Silva, the General Secretary of the SLFP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, several ministers and parliamentarians also attended the meeting.
