The Court of Appeal today imposed the death penalty on Jude Shramantha Jayamaha, convicted for the murder of Yvonne Johnson of Royal Park Apartment in 2005, and quashed of a 12 year jail term imposed by the High Court.

The High Court of Colombo decision to sentence the accused to 12 years rigorous imprisonment for the murder of 19 year old Yvonne Johnson in 2005, the appeal cases filed separately by the accused and the Attorney General were taken up by the Court of Appeal on the 22 of June, while the final verdict on the case will be given today.

Meanwhile The Attorney General has filed an appeal against initial sentencing on the grounds of 12 years rigorous imprisonment and 50,000 which was not adequate for the accused.

This is the first time the Attorney General has appealed on a sentence which was claimed to be too lenient for the accused, claimed the Police Media Unit. The Appeal Court decision clearly indicated that simple punishment insufficient for criminals.
