The dengue epidemic has beaten all other contractible diseases recording the highest number of patients for 2012 so far, Health reports indicated.

It noted that up to December 28 this year, 42,799 dengue cases have been reported.
Of the total, a percentage of 46.92 is reported from the Western Province with Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara recording the highest figures.

Health sources said with rains setting in again, the epidemic was likely to loom large causing more patients in January 2013.
Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has planned to spray the BTI bacteria from the air in March 2013 to combat the spread of dengue mosquitoes.

The Ministry has pointed out that the months from March to May was the period that the dengue epidemic had hit high in recent years.
