The Nation captured this photograph of the unattended and forgotten statue of General Ranjan Wijeratne, a well-known politician and the former Defence Minister of the UNP regime on the day which fell on his 22nd death anniversary. Wijeratne was a planter who became a politician later and became a giant in the UNP regime holding several positions. He was assassinated on March 2, 1991 by the LTTE using a remote controlled car bomb in Colombo. The tragic incident also took another 18 lives; five body guards of the minister and 13 civilians.
Though the Ranjan Wijeratne Foundation was commemorating his death anniversary previous years, we noted everyone seems to have forgotten the politician who sacrificed for the country. The general’s statue is at the Police Park, Colombo 05.
