President makes two key appointments

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday (January 10) made two key appointments after swearing in as the country’s sixth executive president on Friday evening.

Former Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs, P.B. Abeykoon was appointed as the Secretary to the new President. Abeykoon assumed duties at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday. Abeykoon succeeds Lalith Weeratunga who served as the Secretary to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Abeykoon is a senior member of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS) and had joined the SLAS in 1982.

Meanwhile, Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, B.M.U.D. Basnayake was yesterday appointed as the new Secretary to the Ministry of Defense and Urban Development. Basnayake is also a senior member of SLAS. He succeeds Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the Defense Secretary.
