Sri Lanka Muslim Congress media spokesperson Nizam Kariyappar stated that a decision on the Eastern Provincial Council’s future will be taken before the council reconvenes on January 20 (Tuesday). Speaking to The Nation he said that the SLMC was conducting discussions with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) regarding the future of the council.

The Eastern Provincial Council was controlled by an alliance of United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), SLMC and the National Freedom Front (NFF) before a series of defections took place to the camp of the common opposition candidate during the presidential elections. TNA has 11 seats in the 37 member council and SLMC has seven, while the United National Party holds four seats.
