An internal inquiry is currently underway into a series of alleged multimillion rupee frauds that had taken place at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).

A source at the Ministry of Power and Energy said it was as part of this inquiry that offices of seven officials at the CPC, including those of its chairman and managing director were sealed by the Ministry’s Audit Division last week.

“There was information that some persons were trying to smuggle out files relating to some of these frauds. As such, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka immediately ordered that these particular offices be sealed,” the source explained. An internal inquiry has been initiated by the minister as the first stage of this investigation. Thereafter, matters would likely be referred to law enforcement authorities depending on what is uncovered during this inquiry, it was further stated.

As for the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), the source said the danger of anyone attempting to smuggle out files related to corrupt activities were minimal. “The minister is known at the CEB from his previous period of office. No one is likely to try anything and if they were planning to do so, we would hear about it well beforehand,” the source stressed.
