The decision regarding the bus fare reduction has to be endorsed officially by the National Transport Commission and the Ministry of Internal Transport as the private bus operators have already agreed for a fare reduction, said Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne.

Upon query by The Nation regarding the bus fare reduction, National Transport Commission (NTC) officials said that the NTC is still in limbo as no Chairman has been appointed yet and the Ministry has to speed up the process.

Meanwhile, Minister of Internal Transport, Ranjith Madduma Bandara told The Nation yesterday (January 24) that the reduction of bus fares will be implemented this week following the reduction of the fuel prices.

According to the Secretary of the All Island Private Bus Companies Federation, Anjana Priyanjith, “there will be discussions to reduce the bus fares next Tuesday and the public will be notified about the revised bus fare reduction within this week.”
He also added that the bus fare will be reduced soon by 7% following the fuel price reduction and the present minimum fare of Rs.9 will be reduced to Rs.8 by this week.
