Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe meanwhile, was quoted in the media yesterday as revealing that the CJ had assured the President and Prime Minister that he would submit his resignation in return for a posting at a diplomatic mission in Rome. Rajapakshe was also quoted as stating that as this was what the CJ had wanted in exchange for his resignation, it had been arranged with the Foreign Minister to appoint Peiris to Rome.

However, after arriving at the Presidential Secretariat last week to tender his resignation and accept the diplomatic posting, the CJ had reportedly suddenly left without doing so. As such, it is now uncertain whether Peiris would in fact step down from his post as expected by the government.
