More than 20 May Day rallies in Colombo

More than twenty May Day Rallies were held at Colombo. Sri Lanka Freedom Party, United Nation Party, Peoples Liberation Front, Democratic Party, Front Line Socialist Party and the Opposition Alliance, which is trying to bring back Mahinda Rajapaksa, had brought their supporters and members in Colombo to show their strength.

The ruling party United Nation Party (UNP) May Day rally was held at Campbell Park. The May Day rally, which has been named as a ‘Green light for workers’ power,” was led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The march started at at Maligawatta Pradeepa Road and went though the Sangaraja Roundabout, Maradana, Borella, Baseline and Campbell Park Ground.

 Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) had their May rally at Hyde Park. The rally was led by President Maithripala Sirisena. The three parades started from Lipton roundabout, Darley Road and Dawson Road.  The Opposition Alliance comprised of National Freedom Front, Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, New Left Front and several other organizations had their May Day Rally at the Lalith Athulathmudali Ground, Kirulapone. The rally’s main organizer was Alavi Mowlana. They began their march at the Polhengoda Mahaamathya Ground, and via Baseline Road, the march reached Athulathmudali ground.

People Liberation Front (JVP) started their rally at the S.S Jayasinghe ground, Dehiwala.

Democratic Party had their May Day celebrations at Ward Place to Shalika Ground. Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka led the by rally. Front Line Socialist Party celebrated their May Day at Bandaranayake Ground in Rajagiriya with a cultural show instead of rallies.
EPDF, Tamil National Alliance and Ceylon Workers’ Congress were the main parties who were organized rallies out of Colombo. MP Douglas Devananda led EPDF rally was held in Jaffna. R. Sambanthan led Tamil National Alliance rally was held at Trincomalee. Ceylon Workers’ Congress Rally was held Thalawakale.
