Four countries for under 23 international football tourney

For the first time, an International Football tournament will take place at the refurbished Jayathilake Sports Complex in Nawalapitiya where four countries are involved, Bangladesh, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.  The tournament will be an under 23, and the kick off is set for December 3 and will come to an end on December 9.

According to Chrysantha Perera, the CEO of the FFSL, a team of officials visited Nawalapitiya on Friday to make the final arrangements. The winners of this championship will be presented the Mahinda Rajapaksa trophy, and on the first day it will be the Sports Minister who will grace the occasion and on the last, where the final and presentation will take place, President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be the chief guest.

The Jayathilake Stadium was  redeveloped at a cost of Rs. 250 million and it is the first of the nine well equipped and perfect provincial level sports complexes under the ‘Regional Sports Facilities and Complexes Development Program’ launched by the Sports Ministry. It includes a main sporting stadium with 400m track consisting of 8 lanes, with an additional 200 m warm-up track, a well equipped gymnasium and a football/rugby ground. There is also a swimming pool with 8 lanes and an indoor stadium which will facilitate 25 sporting events. A hostel, restaurant, medical centre, VVIP pavilion with 300 seats, VIP pavilion with 500 seats and a pavilion which consists of around 20,000 seats are among the other facilities available at this complex.
