Hambantota to get a Sports Village

Hambantota is to get a Sports Village equipped with facilities of international standards.  This is mainly to focus on the 2017 3rd Asian Youth Games which Sri Lanka will host at Hambantota.President Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed officials to launch the constructions without hindering the people of the area at a special meeting held at Temple Trees.

The Sports Village will come up in the Meegahajandura area at Sooriyawewa in Hambantota close to the present Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium. The Sports Village will have higher educational institutions at University level with Sports Educational Faculties and an Information Technology Park. The village will come up on an extent of 1800 acres. Rs. 15 billion is to be allocated for the project.

The Sports Village will have facilities to play cricket, soccer, rugby, tennis and baseball in addition to a swimming pool - all of them conforming to international standards.Among the other facilities that will be available at this fully fledged village are lodging facilities for sportsmen and women, hotels and shopping complexes. More than 5000 athletes from 45 countries are expected to take part in the Asian Youth Games which is going to be biggest international sport event in Sri Lanka.  The Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga is the Chairman of the Organizing Committee.
