Inter-school All-Island Rugby Sevens Champs

St. Peter’s College rugby coach Colin Denish received the perfect birthday gift from his students on March 17 when the lads from Bambalapitiya annexed the Cup Championship at the All-Island Inter-school Rugby Sevens tournament, worked off at the Royal College Sports Complex in Colombo. The Peterites were down to five players in the closing stages of the final, but managed to defend well and edge out opponents Isipathana College 12-10 in an absorbing final.

“I told the boys that if they are passionate about doing something for their rugby coach on his birthday, to win the Cup Championships trophy for him. This win has made the boys stronger and elevated their morale,” said Denish. The final really tested the Peterites because they were reduced to five as a result of being issued with a yellow card and another player receiving marching orders. “The red card was quite unfortunate for us, but the boys showed a lot of courage to comeback from behind and win,” said Denish. He said the players had stuck to the basic of sevens rugby and made few errors, hence why they won.
“The boys led by Shan Weerakkody have to get all the credit,” opined Denish.

The Peterites had another reason to celebrate during this rugby sevens outing when Anurudhdha Herath was named as the Player of the Tournament. The Peterite coach said that they had decided to skip the Western Province Sevens and concentrate on the all-island event to avoid injuries to players.Denish was quick to thank Mohammed Sheriff, Rajiv Perera (former Peterites) and Thusitha Peiris for making inputs to the rugby sevens training sessions on a voluntary basis. Denish thanked Principal of St. Peter’s College Fr. Rector Travis Gabriel and all others who had provided the team with assistance to bag the sevens rugby plum this season. The Peterites last won the schools rugby sevens in 2011 under Bhanuka Nanayakkara.
