97th Kandy Battle of the Blues

A draw appears to be on the cards though Trinity College has a slight edge over their opponents St. Anthony’s College when these two teams clash in Kandy’s 97th “Battle of the Blues” which will be played at Katugastota next Friday and Saturday with play commencing at 10 a.m. on both days. The present records stand at 22 wins by Trinity and 12 by St. Anthony’s while the rest of the matches have been drawn. Trinity last won in 2012 under Niroshan Dickwella by an innings and one run in a thriller. The Antonians last victory came in 1992 under Umesh de Alwis.

The Trinitians will be fielding a fairly inexperienced side led by Dinuk Wikramanayake. They have played 15 matches, won two and drawn the rest. They have one more match to play against Dharmapala Vidyalaya. Dinuk Wikramanayake is a cricket Lion and he has so far scored 725 runs including a century and his off spin has brought him a haul of 35 wickets.Fourth year coloursman Rajitha Jayatunga is the vice captain of the side. A very attractive bat when well set and has scored 600 runs including an unbeaten century.

The team is coached by Sampath Perera while A. Wishnuwarthan is the Master-in-Charge.The Antonians will be led by all rounder and third year coloursman Sachin Bulathsinghala. Like the Trinitians the Antonians will be fielding an inexperienced side with only the skipper as coloursman. Most of the players were in and out of the side last year. Therefore you cannot expect much from them. This put the pressure on the skipper and his deputy Nimesha Gunasinghe.Sachin Bulathsinghala has scored over 650 runs and also captured 65 wickets with his off spinners which included a hat-trick against Wesley College.Antonians have played 15 matches lost 3 and drawn the rest. But yesterday they have performed well against Kingswood College and could look forward to their first win.
Nimesha Gunasinghe a third year player is the vice captain of the side and he has scored nearly 680 runs and has taken 20 wickets with his off spinners.
The Antonians are coached by Champika Siriwardena with Terrence Wickramanayake as the Master-in-Charge.
