Ex-Sri Lanka opening batsman Malinda Warnapura has taken up a coaching stint at his old school St. Peter’s College where it will be his responsibility to resurrect the fortunes of the senior First Eleven team.

He will initially get down to working with the Under-17 team from next week and then move on to coaching the Under-19 side.

Warnapura said he was expecting a hard course ahead describing school cricket as one of the most demanding to handle.

“School cricket is tough to coach. There are so much of expectations to look forward to, achievements for the taking and obstacles to overcome and I am looking forward to these challenges”, said Warnapura who played 14 Tests and three ODIs for Sri Lanka.
Warnapura captained St. Peter’s College in the 1998 season and made a power-packed 159 in the big match against St. Joseph’s College in that same year.

He now wants to rekindle a flame that made the school an institution that produced top shelf players.

“We have a duty to produce some good players  that can end up playing for the Sri Lanka team if not some quality players who can make it to First Class club level”, said Warnapura who earlier coached Bloomfield Cricket Club for two seasons.
He replaces Keerthi Gunaratne who coached the Peterites for many seasons.
