Six Cambodian citizens have been put behind bars for assaulting a compatriot with weapons in Suwon five months ago.
According to court officials, Sunday, all the six assailants were given prison sentences by the Suwon District Court — from three years and six months to five years — for brutally attacking the victim in his 40s, June 9, for the purpose of showing off their influence in the Cambodian community.
“The accused used violence to show off their influence among Cambodian residents in Korea … Some committed the crime while staying here even after their visas expired,” Judge Gong Hyun-jin said. “One of the defendants gave an order to assault the victim with baseball bats and the rest of them attacked him, for no obvious reason.”
As a result, the victim suffered bone fractures and other types of injuries that would require five weeks of treatment.
Three of the attackers were also involved in another case in which they attacked three other Cambodians in the same area between December 2023 and January of this year.
At least four of them were found to have been staying here illegally, without any valid visas.
