All schools and educational institutions will open and operate as usual across the country on Wednesday despite President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of emergency martial law.
Schools can be temporarily closed for student safety when emergency martial law is declared.
In a text message to reporters at 12:53 a.m. early Wednesday, the education ministry said "all operations and academic schedules will run as normal."
The ministry added that it will inform reporters in the event of "any changes in the situation."
Classes at elementary, middle and high schools, as well as universities, will proceed as normal, according to the ministry's message.
Martial law declarations in South Korea have previously involved nationwide school closures, including during the last declaration of martial law in 1980. (Yonhap)
