An Australian man forgot to switch to the right side of the road in a fatal crash.
An Australian tourist has been sentenced to two months in jail and a year of probation after killing an elderly couple while he was driving a BMW on the wrong side of the road in San Mateo County last year.
The driver, Luke Nardini, pleaded no contest to two counts of vehicular manslaughter. He was also ordered to complete 10 hours of community service, according to several media outlets.
The crash happened on Sept. 1, 2023, in Redwood City on Highway 84 near Peek-A-Boo Lane, the California Highway Patrol previously told SFGATE.
Nardini merged into the westbound lane while driving, crashing head-on into a Ford vehicle with four occupants, killing two 80-year-old La Honda residents. Prosecutors said Nardini had forgotten to move back to the right side of the road because Australians drive on the left.
The couple, identified as Linda and Jack Davis, was traveling through a “sweeping curve” before noticing Nardini’s vehicle approaching about 10 feet away, the Sacramento Bee reported.
Nardini wasn’t in jail during his trial, but he is expected to surrender Friday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.)
