A 22-year-old British recruitment consultant has finally returned home after spending nearly a year detained in a Dubai prison over alleged drug offences, bringing an emotional end to a prolonged and distressing ordeal that gripped her family.
Isabella Daggett, originally from Leeds, West Yorkshire, arrived back in the United Kingdom last Friday—almost exactly a year after her arrest in the Gulf state. Her return follows months of uncertainty, legal complications, and mounting concerns over her welfare in detention.
Ms Daggett had moved to Dubai early last year after securing what was described as a lucrative recruitment job in the tax-free emirate. However, her new life quickly took a dramatic turn when she was arrested during a drugs raid just weeks after arriving in the country.
Authorities accused her of drug possession—an offence treated with strict severity under United Arab Emirates law, where even minor infractions can result in lengthy prison sentences. If convicted, Ms Daggett had faced the possibility of several years behind bars.
Her family, however, consistently maintained her innocence, insisting she had been “in the wrong place at the wrong time” and caught up in circumstances beyond her control. It is understood that she was arrested alongside a man with whom she had been temporarily staying.
Details surrounding the exact nature of the charges were never publicly disclosed by UAE authorities, leaving her relatives in the dark for much of the past year.

Charges Dropped, But Ordeal Continued
In January, nearly ten months after her arrest, the charges against Ms Daggett were dropped. However, her release was delayed further after authorities imposed a fine of approximately £3,000 for overstaying her visa.
Family friends described the additional penalty as a frustrating final hurdle in an already traumatic experience.
“It felt like one last blow after everything she had been through,” a close family acquaintance said. “Everyone thought she would be home immediately once the charges were dropped. But instead, there was another delay. Now, there’s just overwhelming relief.”
Harsh Conditions Alleged
At the height of the family’s anxiety, relatives spoke out about the harsh conditions Ms Daggett was allegedly enduring in detention.
Her grandmother, Heather Smith, described a bleak environment where basic necessities were lacking.
“She hadn’t had a shower for a month and no change of clothes for three months,” she claimed. “Women are treated far worse than male prisoners. It was unbearable for the family to hear.”
Despite the conditions, Ms Daggett was reportedly able to maintain daily contact with her mother and grandmother, offering some reassurance during the difficult period.
Family’s Fight for Justice
Throughout the ordeal, Ms Daggett’s family campaigned tirelessly for her release. Her mother, Lucinda Smith, even launched a fundraising campaign to help cover legal and travel expenses, raising nearly £1,500.
In her appeal, she described her daughter as “wrongfully detained” and expressed deep concern over the conditions she was facing.
“The legal and travel expenses are overwhelming,” she wrote at the time. “But we are determined to prove her innocence and bring her home.”
Emotional Homecoming
Since her return, Ms Daggett has begun rebuilding her life, spending time with family and sharing moments of her recovery on social media.
Images posted online show her enjoying a peaceful day out with her mother in North Yorkshire, including a boating trip and picnic—simple pleasures that had been out of reach during her time in detention.
In a reflective message shared online, she wrote: “Life is short. Love who loves you. Be at peace.”
Silence After Survival
Despite her release, Ms Daggett has remained cautious about speaking publicly regarding her experience. Observers note that strict laws in the UAE regarding criticism of the state may contribute to her reluctance.
Her family has also urged her to remain careful, warning of the stark contrast between Dubai’s glamorous image and the realities of its legal system.
A Cautionary Tale
The case highlights the risks faced by expatriates in countries with strict legal frameworks, particularly regarding drug-related offences.
For Ms Daggett and her family, however, the focus now is on recovery and moving forward after what they describe as a “year of hell.”
While questions remain about the circumstances of her arrest, one thing is certain—her safe return home marks the end of a deeply distressing chapter.
