Three camels have been spotted causing havoc along a busy road after escaping from a church nativity scene.

The Bridgeman Baptist Community Church, in Bridgeman Downs, northern Brisbane, confirmed the curious animals had wandered off with the trio seen walking along the side of a road past a string of cars.

They were seen heading down Albany Creek Road just after 10am on Friday, causing headaches for commuters on their way to work.

'Our camels got a bit lost on the way to Bethlehem! Gladly they're back safe and sound now,' the church wrote on Facebook.

A spokesperson for the church told Daily Mail Australia the camels had been a part of their Christmas shows and were looked after by a local company specialising in camel rides, Camelot Camels.

Melanie Fitzgibbon, one of the company's owners, said it took about 30 minutes to bring back the cheeky camels.

'Where we are they're housed quite safely, and we fed them this morning and my husband said he'd take them for a walk and when he went to check on them they'd opened the gate,' she said.

'They were on foot just a bit further ahead of us, we knew where they were it was just a matter of catching up with them - they're quick travellers.'

Ms Fitzgibbon said the camels were brought back safely and had had some lunch and a snooze ahead of another Christmas show.

'It was definitely something for the commuters to see!' she said.
