Josh Frydenberg could be set for a shock return to politics with Alan Tudge expected to quit parliament sparking a by-election.

Mr Tudge, who is the federal member of the outer-eastern Melbourne seat of Aston, is set to announce his resignation after question time on Thursday.

It's led to rumours that former treasurer Josh Frydenberg will make a bid for the seat of Aston.

Mr Frydenberg lost the seat of Kooyong, an electorate that had been held by the Liberal party since federation, in last year's federal election to independent MP, Monique Ryan.
