A driver who was allegedly double the drink-driving limit was arrested after an uninsured car he was driving was stopped by police in Co Down.

On Thursday evening, January 16, a silver Seat car with no insurance or MOT passed police in the Killyleagh area. Police said the driver "dumped the car nearby" and left the scene.

A man returned to the car as it was being seized however, he attempted to run away after spotting police. The man was caught following a foot chase.

He was found to be double the drink-driving limit, and was arrested for a number of offences. Police have confirmed he remains in custody.

Sharing an image of the car on social media, a spokesperson for the PSNI added: "This car passed police this evening in Killyleagh. It had no insurance and also no MoT since 2023.

"The driver dumped the car nearby and had left the scene. As we were seizing the car, a male returned to the car - upon seeing police he attempted to run away, but was caught following a foot chase. He blew double the drink-drive limit and was found to have a lock-knife in his pocket.

"The driver was arrested for a number of offences. He will spend the night in a police cell and he will have to account for his actions at court."
