Coronation Street star Channique Sterling-Brown, who portrays Dee-Dee Bailey on the soap, has confessed to feeling "nervous" during the filming of recent impactful scenes.
In a candid conversation on the Off Script podcast with hosts Kelvin and Elizabeth Fletcher, the Corrie actor opened up about her apprehension when shooting the significant moments for the ITV soap.
Reflecting on her time on set, the 27-year-old shared: "I was nervous about it, it's a big story to tell, it's a complicated story to tell."
Despite her initial nerves, she expressed her surprise at the overwhelming public response to the challenging storyline: "I've really been blown away by the response to this story because people have been so engaged and so positive."
The latest plot involving Channique's character has seen Coronation Street tackle the sensitive issue of racial injustice in maternity care, following Dee-Dee's experiences during her pregnancy.
Viewers of the show have recently seen Dee-Dee confront several distressing situations related to her pregnancy, including being dismissed from the hospital while in labour and in considerable pain.
After being readmitted to the hospital and delivering her baby, Dee-Dee faced further complications requiring emergency surgery due to a haemorrhage, which resulted in her having a hysterectomy.
Reflecting on a recent plotline, she said: "For me, I've never given birth, so a big thing for me was honouring mothers and doing that well. Also honouring our NHS, they are understaffed, overstretched, and that's obviously a factor."
While Channique has certainly made her mark on the show over the years, there could have been a different path for her as she revealed an audition once upon a time for Emmerdale didn't go her way.
However, it wasn't long before Channique's acting prospects soared when she secured the role of Dee-Dee Bailey in Coronation Street in 2022.
Since joining Coronation Street, she has become a household favourite, grappling with some major storylines along the way.
Dating Joel Deering from 2023 appeared to be heading towards marriage until it emerged he was cheating on her with Lauren Bolton.
After the tumultuous discovery and subsequent split, Joel met his demise at Lauren's hands.
But the drama continued as Dee-Dee found out she was expecting Joel's baby, ultimately deciding her brother James and his partner Danny Tomlinson would adopt the child.
