Main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) leader Lee Jae-myung said Friday the party would push ahead with its plan to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo and called for the swift eradication of what he labeled as "insurgent forces."

Lee made the remarks in a public address at the National Assembly, calling President Yoon Suk Yeol the "mastermind" behind the insurrection attempt over his failed martial law bid on Dec. 3.

"At this moment, suppressing the insurrection is the country's paramount task," Lee said, stressing the removal of the "insurgent forces" is the "only path to restoring normalcy."

Lee's comments appear to be targeting the ruling party and Yoon, who has defied repeated summonses over his martial law imposition and had refused to accept documents related to his trial until Friday morning.

Lee also criticized the acting president for refusing to appoint three Constitutional Court justice nominees that will adjudicate Yoon's trial.

The DPK will push for his impeachment at a plenary session later in the day, he added. (Yonhap)
