Family and friends in festive pub quiz tribute to Belfast man on 35th birthday after sudden death

6 months ago 302

A young Belfast man is to be remembered by his loved ones this festive season as they mark their fifth Christmas without him.

Patrick 'Paddy' Sheridan, originally from the south of the city, sadly passed away in September 2019 and would have turned 35 later this month. After Paddy's tragic passing, a group of close school friends organised a pub quiz in London to raise funds for a charity supporting men's mental health.

The event was hugely successful, raising £26,000 and drawing over 350 quizzers. The event united people in their support of mental health and his memory. However, his friends always knew that if they did it again, it would be in Belfast, where his story began.

Now, five years after his passing, the friends are returning to Belfast intending to raise £35,000 in his memory to support local mental health services on what would have been Paddy's 35th birthday.

This December, people from all walks of life are invited to come together for a festive night of fun at Boneyard Belfast for a pub quiz with a purpose. Hosted in memory of Paddy, the quiz on Friday, 27th December aims to not only remember him but also shine a light on the mental health challenges many face, raising vital funds for mental health charity, AWARE NI.

Chris Donnelly, one of his close friends and organisers, said the ‘Pub Quiz 4 Paddy’ will be both a celebration of his life and an open invitation for everyone—whether you knew him or not—to come together, have fun, and contribute to a vital cause.

He added: "We want this quiz to be a way for people to remember our deeply missed and loved friend but also connect, especially when loneliness and mental health struggles are often more pronounced.

"The holidays can be tough, and we hope this event can help bring people together, support each other, and raise awareness for mental health, all while having a great time. Whether you knew him or want to show your support, we'd love for you to join us."

The event will raise funds for AWARE NI, a local charity focused on supporting those affected by depression, anxiety, and bipolar in Northern Ireland.

Lesley Wright, Community Fundraising Officer at AWARE NI, said: "We are honoured to have been the chosen charity for this fantastic event. It's incredibly moving to see Paddy's much-loved friends remember him in such a meaningful way, raising vital funds for mental health support.

"The 'Pub Quiz 4 Paddy' is a wonderful opportunity to bring people together, raise awareness, and support a cause that affects so many, especially during the festive season when mental health challenges are heightened. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of his friends and family and for everyone who takes part in this important event."

The event will feature competitive trivia, spot prizes, festive fun, and a chance to raise essential funds for mental health support. Organisers hope to draw 300 participants for an unforgettable night, open to anyone and everyone who wants to make a difference.

Tickets are available now, and organisers encourage you to sign up with your team of quiz lovers, or come along and meet others who share your commitment to supporting mental health. For more information and to purchase your ticket, click here.
