Altumint says automated photo enforcement programs reduce traffic incidents
ORLANOD, Fla. – Florida has the third highest pedestrian traffic fatality rate in the country, according to a new report released by Altumint, a leader in traffic safety technology.
The report stated that student pedestrians in Florida’s school zones are particularly at risk, finding that 54% of drivers do not obey posted speed limits in school zones. In a 2023 AAA Consumer Pulse Survey, 38% of Floridians admitted to speeding in an active school zone.
Altumint’s report stresses the importance of using automated photo enforcement programs to reduce traffic incidents—a strategy now supported by Florida state law HB 657, which allows cities and counties to use cameras to target speeders in school zones.
Holly Cooper, CEO of Altumint, said “six months after the program has been in place, we’ve seen a 90% reduction in speeding. What we find is that the majority of people that get tickets, they only get them once, which is why these programs are a great tool to allow us to create a safer roadway.”
The city of Eustis signed the first contract with Altumint in the state of Florida earlier this year.
Eustis Police Chief Craig Capri spoke first to News 6′s Trooper Steve in July to discuss the technology, saying it will help save lives and the program will be “funded by the violators, not by the taxpayers.”
