Money part of $3.7B federal LIHEAP release

ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida has been awarded over $100 million as part of the latest release of funding from the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday released a total of nearly $3.7 billion in LIHEAP funding through the Administration for Children and Families, largely in preparation for the winter season, according to an HHS news release.

In Florida, Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Orlando, said in a statement that the $106,028,700 awarded to the Sunshine State would go toward helping residents pay their bills for summer cooling and winter heating alike.

“Florida families should never have to choose between living in extreme heat or putting food on the table, but that’s exactly the choice too many working people are facing in our state,” Frost said in the statement. “Over $100 million coming to Florida means warmer winters, cooler summers, and safer homes for low-income households, particularly those with seniors, individuals with disabilities, and young children. Thanks to President Biden and our Democratic colleagues in Congress, Florida families are going to see their energy costs go down and their quality of living go up.”
