A former East Belfast school teacher is to stand trial at the crown court on child sex offences.

William Maher, of Kings Brae in Belfast, appeared at Laganside Court on Wednesday, December 18, for a preliminary enquiry as he faced nine charges of sex offences against a child.

Maher is charged with seven counts of sexual communication with a child under the age of 16 and two counts of inciting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity.

The alleged offences are claimed to have taken place between September 1, 2021 and May 24, 2022, against two children.

He has now been committed to the crown court for trial at a date that is yet to be set and was granted bail.
