The transport ministry said Tuesday it will launch an aviation seatbelt awareness campaign to prevent turbulence-related accidents during flights, amid the year-end travel season, currently under way.

The campaign, running from Wednesday through Feb. 2, aims to raise awareness about the dangers of turbulence during flights and the importance of wearing seatbelts.

Actor Kim Kwang-kyu and girl group CLASS:y will participate in advertisements and campaign songs, which will be put on digital displays at major airports and screens in public transportation, including KTX bullet trains.

Over the past three years, air turbulence was responsible for 111 aviation accidents worldwide, accounting for 61.7 percent of the total 180 accidents, according to the ministry.

Korean airlines reported 14,820 air turbulence incidents in the first six months of this year, which accounted for 72 percent of last year's total. (Yonhap)
