An Illinois judge on Wednesday evening ordered Donald Trump’s name to be removed from the state’s Republican presidential primary ballot, but stayed her own ruling in anticipation of an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The high court is expected to take up the matter and decide for the entire country, once and for all, whether the former president is ineligible to take another shot at the White House under the 14th Amendment, which bars any “officer of the United States” from holding office if they’ve previously engaged in “insurrection or rebellion.”
The Illinois primary is on March 19. Trump’s team has asked the Supreme Court to make a decision on the matter ahead of Super Tuesday—March 5— when 15 states and one U.S. territory will hold their primaries. The high court has indicated that it will do so.
