An Iranian ballistic missile struck the southern Israeli city of Dimona, injuring around 20 people in what officials describe as a highly alarming escalation near one of Israel’s most sensitive strategic sites.
According to Israel’s emergency service, Magen David Adom, those injured were mainly affected by shrapnel from the explosion. Among them was a 10-year-old boy, reported to be in moderate condition.
Dramatic footage circulating on social media showed the missile descending toward a residential area before detonating in a massive fireball. Additional footage appeared to show an interceptor missile attempting—but failing—to neutralize the incoming projectile.
Emergency teams were deployed across multiple locations in the affected area, treating victims for shrapnel injuries, injuries sustained while rushing to shelters, and acute anxiety.
The strike is particularly significant due to Dimona’s proximity to the highly sensitive Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center, widely believed to be central to Israel’s nuclear programme. Iran had earlier issued threats to target the facility amid rising tensions involving Israel and the United States.
Escalation Extends Beyond the Middle East
The incident comes just hours after reports of Iranian ballistic missiles being fired toward Diego Garcia, a strategic military base jointly operated by the United States and the United Kingdom.
According to sources, one missile reportedly failed mid-flight, while another was intercepted by a US warship. If confirmed, this would mark the first known missile strike targeting the remote base.
The timing of the attack has sparked political controversy in the UK, with Kemi Badenoch accusing Prime Minister Keir Starmer of withholding information about the incident from the public.
Concerns Over Expanding Missile Range
Defence analysts say the attacks indicate a significant expansion in Iran’s missile capabilities. Previously believed to have a maximum range of around 2,000 km, the strike toward Diego Garcia—located roughly 3,800 km from Iran—suggests a much broader operational reach.
Experts warn that such advancements could place major European capitals within potential range. Cities like Paris and even London may now fall within what analysts describe as a growing “zone of vulnerability.”
The latest developments follow Israeli strikes earlier this month on Iran’s primary space research facility in Tehran, amid concerns over possible military applications, including satellite-based attack capabilities.
