An Irish man has been detained in Hungary by police investigating the death of his ex-wife.
The charred body of the victim - whose name was not revealed by authorities - was found in a burned-out apartment in central Budapest on Wednesday, January 29. Investigators initially did not suspect foul play.
However, local media is reporting that police detained the man, an Irish citizen, on Monday on suspicion of killing his ex-wife.
According to Hungarian police, the Irish national had alerted the emergency services and signs suggested the fire was caused by the victim smoking in her bed.
Friends of the deceased woman subsequently claimed that she did not smoke and police arrested her ex-husband for questioning. He denies killing his ex-wife.
Around 200 people attended a vigil on Tuesday evening in central Budapest placing flowers and candles near the building.
